More good press for the Last Vispo
In the Paris Review Daily Blog, managing editor Nicole Rudick discusses the visual artistry of text & the view by writers of writing as a visual activity in a preambule to a note on the Last Vispo. the blog entry features several pieces from the book, including my own "Sun."
i'm very chuffed. it's the Paris freakin' Review!
it's a sweet acknowledgement. now back to our regularly scheduled activity. i haven't been working much with visual poems of late, but i've been mucking about with arcylyic paint on various textures. to get a look at these, if you so desire, you can go here.

published!
my visual poetry has recently been published in two publications:
the Last Vispo Anthology: visual poetry 1998-2008, edited by Nico Vassilakis and Crag Hill & published by Fantagraphics Books. how cool is it to be published by a publisher who's published R. Crumb?!
Here's what Maria Damon had to say about my two pieces "Sun" & "Man."
"Before the computer was used there was, of course, wood and lead type as well; all thes remembered when I see the abstract concrete poems of Amanda Earl's 'Sun' and 'Man.' These poems remind me of those strong, old methods, the computer matches those skills. Here the words and letters are the image. They are strong shadows of the past." thanks, Maria!
in these pieces, along with much of my other attemps at visual poetry, i combined manual methods with modern tech. i used rub on letters, no longer Letraset because it isn't available anywhere i know of, onto some scraps of gorgeously textured paper from St. Armand Paper Makers in Montreal. i scanned in the pieces.
"cluster of As" is the second publication, a wee chapbook made by Ottawa small press publisher Phafours, run by Pearl Pirie. i believe copies will be available at the ottawa small press book fair & i'll have some on hand for anyone who wants one. thanks, Pearl!

Bob Grumman's comments on my visual poetry
in reference to work published in the bleed 0.1. "First up is Amanda Earl, with a three-piece suite of concrete poetry (i.e., producing a viso-aesthetic effect through the use of typography only). Based on passages of “The Song of Solomon,” it begins with one consisting of a set of three stacks each of which contains the words, “My beloved is mine, and I am his: he feeds among the lilies,” in alphabetical order, and three more with the same words except for “am” and “the” in the same order. These latter are perpendicular to, and on top, of the other set. Trust me, the resulting gestalt captures–and renews–all that the original song celebrated. The sequence’s two other poems are equally effective."
